If you go on a tour will you be hitting up Calgary?

Tour would be fun, we working on major cities right now, we hit Edmonton in November, so that’ll probably be the closest spot we return to in Alberta for now, hopefully BC and UK will be popping off soon.

Your lyrics are often very powerful and tackle many global issues, as a writer what do you think would be most conducive to your writing in terms of environment, atmosphere and mental state. Do you often write when you are bothered, as an outlet? Or do you find yourself coming up with lyrics as you see the world, which in turn, inspires you to write.

Effective writers, whether it’s literature or music, are successful at communicating their ideas

when they connect with their audience. I come from an education background, so the focus isn’t the content, but rather how to deliver the content. Sometimes I find it conducive to use vulgar vocabulary to catch ears, or express ideas in a certain tone, so the words don’t just blend in with the heavy beat.

I don’t write as an outlet, because I’d probably spend more time trying to get all my ideas out that the actual delivery would suffer. If I’m just articulating an already formularized idea, then it’s much easier because I can focus strictly how on to share these ideas and concepts as effectively as possible. The global issues I’ve discussed are just topics that interest me. When I’m in a good mood, my mind is much clearer, and it’s easier to get my ideas out on paper. But I have written a few pieces like ‘My Own Eyes’,‘The Essence’ & ‘Welcome Spring’ purely from frustration and emotion.

Overall I find inspiration from observing things around me, Voice for the Voiceless was inspired by a conversation I had with a friend, who happened to be a relative of one of the murder victims mentioned in that track. I wanted to find a way to help him channel the frustration to the audience that really needs to hear about it.

How much of what you do is nature and how much is nurtured?

My actual ability to write and delivery lyrics is probably 95% nurture. Someone like Jay Z or Method Man are naturals and probably think in rhyme all the time. My abilities to do so come the same way a child learns to play the piano, practice and study.

In terms of nature, I observe a lot, and feel fortunate that I can actually learn from watching other people make mistakes, I don’t think that was a learned behavior. The actual writing is a process though, and it’s definitely not as easy as I try to make it seem.

How long is your... Beard?

Long enough to get me a Santa gig at the mall if this rap thing doesn’t work out…

How important is the Bluestar or 1984 riots issue is to you and where does it rank among the things you care about if it does at all

I was re-educated on the events of 1984 this past summer, and it’s given me a clearly understanding and background to why the community carries itself in certain manners. If people can’t connect with events that specifically targeted their communities, they won’t be able to connect with any other. I think it’s important that every Punjabi understand that

#1 the events of June 1984 were targeting the people of Punjab, not the Sikh religion, and that the conflict is a human rights issue, and not a holy war as they would like folks to think. The events were planned 18 months in advance and were not a reaction to one man or group of people held up within Amritsar.

#2 The events of November 1984 were not a random series of events, but rather a systematic, organized massacre on PUNJABI (not just practicing Sikh) peoples. Voter’s lists were used to direct the mobs to attack, and a Punjabi last name, regardless of political affiliation or religious devotion, qualified you to be a victim.

It’s important for all Punjabis to understand, this was not a Hindu vs. Sikh issue, this was an oppressive majority suppressing a minority. When this connection is made, we can see the similarities with the Tamils in Sri Lanka, Palestinians in the Middle East, the Sudanese in Darfur, and even the Native Aboriginals in North America. Once we connect with these issues we realize that 1984 is still happening and that we as oppressed minorities can join forces to become the new majority and end the oppression.

My sister is big on Twilight, I like Kate Beckinsale and the whole Underworld movement, so I’ll say Vampires.

What’s your advice for other songwriters, poets, rappers, etc???

Practice, practice, study your craft, practice and more practice. Talent is always a matter of opinion, but work ethic can be measured and the payoffs are clear. I don’t believe in luck, I believe in work.

When is the next mixtape coming out??

I want to say March, but I’d be lying. I can say it’ll only be 10-12 tracks, butt they’ll all be full length, no more short 1 min verses. I’m going to say March, but I’m Desi, so you know that means August.

What kind of message (if any) do youur try to portray thru your lyrics? And also what is your major concern about the world? Religion? Politics? Etc

I just want to expose folks to ideas that they may not normally come across in the lifestyles they lead. I just want to clearly articulate concepts that are underrepresented in hip hop and the communities I connect with. It’s easy to forget that there’s two sides of a coin, and when the powers that be want people to ignore that other side, we need to spend extra effort to shed light back on that unrepresented side.

In terms of politics, my main concern is government getting involved in every element of our lives, it gives a sense of comfort, but it’s also very scary the amount of civil liberties are being suspended in the process.

In terms of religion, my main concern is people relying on intangible ideas and hope to rationalize ways of live, which are fear-based, exploitative, and inequitable. The ruling parties have been using religion for some time to keep the masses in order, we need to think a lot more for ourselves, and reduce the western influence on what we think is being spiritual, or a good person at that.

In the world, it just kills me to see how people have become apathetic, and are able to justify such horrific acts upon each other. If each government was a person, many of them would deserve a punch in the eye for the evil things they impose upon the weaker nations.

If I write a song will you sing it?

I can’t sing =), and anyone can learn to rap, so if you can write, you should be able to perform it yourself, which will always sound better.

How do u select what kind of artists you want to collab with??

Anyone who can fill in the gaps I leave, and is able to do the things I can’t, or represent a way I couldn’t. The goal is to make the track well rounded. We all chemicals, and when we interact and mix with each other, we get a certain reaction, I just try to see what makes magic that way.

As a lyricist/poet, do you think it is necessary for an artist to suffer/struggle personally in order to produce lyrics that are insightful and thought provoking...in other words, do you think that depth of character can be gained without hardship?

Insightful and though provoking lyrics come from HOW you articulate the idea, insightful and thought provoking ideas expressed n those lyrics will come from experience. I’m not Palestinian, but I felt the anger and frustration through my empathy for their cause. Personal hardships are not the requisite to build character, just being able to find lessons and gaining wisdom from life experiences.

When we step outside our shoes, and connect with other people, their hardships/struggles become ours. At that point when can bare their load and help out any way we see fit. Whether that’s writing a check, getting involved, or shining light on the situation to your peoples. Plus everyone can find a reason to be EMO these days, and someone will always have it better, and more folks will definitely have it worse.

Well. Do u plan on getting rich off rap?

I’d like to do this full time, don’t need to be rich off it though. I have quite a few other jobs that keep the bills paid as of now. A Blue collar artist who has to stay on the road 300 days a year does sound pretty cool though.

Have you been offered to any record labels?

No record deals have been offered, and we haven’t solicited any record companies in hopes to get one. A Record deal is a whole other mess. We’ll be staying independent for the time being.

Who are your biggest influences, and why? Some of your favorite books, musicians, movies...etc.

Dave Chapelle; he’s able to entertain and inform in the language of the people he communicates with, and he does it well with complete creative freedom.

Andre 3000; best written emcee in history, probably has perfected the art.

Are you going to let me produce for you?

After we release the acapllas, I’m hoping to fall in love with producers I haven’t heard before, so that answer should be a ‘YES’

If you hit it big would you still talk to your fans as you do now or forget like other rappers and just say you connect to the fans but really don’t?

I appreciate folks taking the time out to write to me, so I try to do the same, obviously if things get busier, it won’t be as easy, but I’ll always try. I know the lead singer for Weezer stayed real connected with his fans, and would invite friends he made off his website to hang out after shows and stuff. I think it’d be really cool to have crews of friends all over the world, so I got folks to kick it with wherever I have a show.

What made u enter the music world? Many know you have a profession but along with that you went off and decided to hit up the music scene. What made u decide that? Or was it a plan that you always had, but just didn't have the time to actually expose it to the public?

I always wrote, mainly poems to impress girls. I went to a K-Os concert back in 2003, and he had an opening act by the name of Kamau. Kamau did only spoken word, and I was so amazed I wanted to try it out myself. After I started releasing music, the people kept supporting and making it a natural decision to keep moving forward. It was never the plan, but we’ve mapped out a plan now to ride the wave.

I wrote short stories in high school, and thought I was pretty good, I don’t really think I shared them at the time. There were other dudes in my high school that were doing the rap thing, and they were much better than me at the time, It took me a long time to get the confidence to try to make it happen. I still see folks from my high school, and they show nothing but love. But I definitely was not known for this back then. I wasn’t into hip hop until I was 16.

Why don’t you get a big record deal

Record deals aren’t handed out based on talent, their based on marketability. Someone like me would have to show my marketability through my own fan base before a major label will put money into me. The thing is once they own you, they’ll control you, and that just doesn’t make any sense. Hip Hop represents freedom for me, not another chance to be an employee. If I can put up the numbers to impress a record company, then I’m probably doing well enough to stay independent. Independent means, although I won’t be given $500 000 to shoot videos, I’ll have the freedom to talk about whatever I want, however I want and whenever I want. Instead I’ll be starting my own label, and giving artists I believe in chances to be heard through the resources I have.

I’ve got a few tattoos, and I’ve been getting them since I was 17. I can remember being in high school thinking I was the hottest kid under the sun with one sleeve up showing off my corny ass lion with the word SINGH written underneath (first one had to be Mama-Poet-approved, since I was underage). Now I’m 28, trying strategically to avoid the label ‘tattooed freak as I recently got the word TRUTH on the side of my hand (Mama-Poet didn’t approve). One thing's for sure the permanent ink I got in my teens barely reflects the thoughts and ideas I wish to be represented by today. When I was younger, folks told me not to do it, because they said I would regret them in future; they were wrong, I don’t regret any of them, even the ones that bare no relevance to my life and current mind state. The reason I can bare to live with them is that they represent moments in my life, like time stamps. I remember where I was, what I was feeling, and what I was going through during the moment in time I went under the needle for that specific piece. They serve as little flags along the road incase I want to look back in this journey of life. If anything, I only wish I could make them bigger, brighter and bolder, because I love the way they look. And that long story is the intro to my thoughts today on Substance Vs. Art

Over time the relevance of an idea may wither, but the art can stand the test of time. With this hip hop, I’m trying very hard to craft my lyrics in such a way, that even if I wake up tomorrow morning and decide the Police are my friends, I can still bump ‘Cry Now’ in the car because it’s still a hot joint musically. When Public Enemy came out with Fight The Power, the music was on par, which only amplified the message. Since then, there haven’t been many artists who can put a message in the music without sounding corny. Dead Prez did an amazing job, but even they were typecast as ‘nerds’ of hip hop. Revolutionary concepts in hip hop has probably best been delivered by immortal technique, a dude that comes off so gangster, delivers lyrics so flawlessly, with a voice so powerful, people are forced to listen. Though folks may think his thoughts and politics are the magic, it’s really his delivery of those ideas and concepts.

Take for example, his track Beef & Broccoli, a spoken word track tearing a whole in the idea of the righteousness of being a vegetarian. That track got me checking myself, and laughing at the insult he hurled at veggies. It didn’t make me get into meat, but he worded it in such a sense that I wasn’t able to dismiss his points and ideas. If anything it made me respect him more for taking a shot at the self-righteous.

My favourite rapper Andre 3000 of Outkast said over a year ago, that he doesn’t even believe in 90% of the things he used to rap about anymore. The songs are still classic because the arts on point. So let’s focus on the art, and anyone who feels they want to spread a message, realize the message should take a back seat to the art, otherwise you’ll be left with a bored audience who won’t pay you any attention in the future. Outkast perfected the art of music with substance, because the music came first, it’s just that when you took the time to read the lyrics, they had an impact as well.

So never settle for the corniness. If I come corny, I expect and beseech (that’s a big word for BEG) y’all to let me know so I can come correct. 20 years from now a beautifully drawn naked mermaid will still look better than a quick doodle of Mother Teresa… add substance to your art… don’t depend on substance to be the art.

Sometimes the club-scene feels like a documentary straight out of the Discovery Channel... one of my personal favourites.

I Don't believe in Haters

You hear rappers talk about haters often. They credit haters as their motivation to keep moving forward. Some actually thank their haters. You’ll hear comments like “The hate only makes me stronger”, and I never understood that. When folks start to clump all the negativity towards them as hate, then they’re doing the exact opposite of making themselves stronger. When artist start believing their own hype and dismissing anything less than praise as hate, they’re throwing away gold nuggets of wisdom and opportunity for growth. This ignorance towards any view that is different from “You’re fucking awesome” is really just cutting you off from reality. It's dangerous to think that negative comments could be used to quantify success.The idea that: "the more they hate, the more I must be doing right" can cause a further disconnect to whats really going on. Take it for what it's worth and keep it moving.

People can provide constructive criticism, and that criticism shows they took the time to experience what you do, and care enough to help you enhance it. “you’re garbage” isn’t constructive, or even critical for that matter, it’s just an attempt to illicit a response. Comments like that that don’t make me stronger, it just makes the person making those comments weaker. The fact that they actually invested calories to share a generic insult for the purposes of trying to cause harm doesn’t reflect on my work, or myself, it reflects on them. Randomly calling a woman a bitch, doesn’t make her a bitch, it jus make me jerk. So these comments that are so often labeled as hate, aren’t really hate at all. Because they’re not directing hate towards someone, they’re just bringing attention to themselves and their hurtful intentions. Who really looks bad after the comment is made?

So I don’t believe in haters, I’m just flattered that people still take the time to write me, even if they aren’t leaving the most positive comments. And since I don’t dismiss those comments as hate, I won’t miss out on the knowledge folks kick at me, when they got valid criticism.

e.g.

Humble P: “Yo, what you think of the new track and video?”

Harman The Hater: “I loved the video, but can I make a comment about the track?”

Humble P: “yea man, go for it”

Harman The Hater: “I love the beat, but I can’t understand all your lyrics, you’re mumbling some of the parts, I think you need to re-record”

Humble P: “Your probably right, I know the lyrics, so they’re clear to me, never thought about what an outsider might be taking in”

My homeboys already call me Mumble The Poet, and the criticism is valid. So if y’all got something mean to say, just make sure it makes sense? If I’m an eMCee, then making disrespectful comments about my appearance doesn’t hurt me, it jus gets filed under “what the F#&@ does that have to do with hip hop?” folder. If you want to throw proper darts, make comments on the actual content I create, but if your comments make sense, I’ll be thankful for the advice. If your goal is to try to hurt my feelings, I’m too old for that; at this point, the only people that can hurt me, are the ones I love, and they wouldn’t be worth loving if they were trying to hurt me.

When I hear or see disrespectful comments towards myself, or anyone else, I just try to figure out what happened to the person making the comments. Either their mamma didn’t hug’em enough, or they’re just disappointed in themselves and need to project the frustration towards someone.

Personally I only hate when I’m jealous; lucky for me, I haven’t been jealous in a while :)

This is what happens when I wait too long between posts

Harman The Hater told me to be more positive in my blog posts, and I promise you I will eventually, but not today. Today is venting time. But before I vent, I have to rant, and tell a story about another rapper, and keep you in suspense (or bore you to death) as to what my actual point is.

Jin the MC is Miami based rapper of East Asian decent; Chinese to be specific. He was one of few rappers to win 7 consecutive freestyle battles on BET’s 106/park. After that he got a record deal with Ruff Ryders (the same record label that brought DMX and EVE into the world). He made claims that he didn’t want to be labeled as a Chinese rapper, and that he could hold his own with any MC irrespective of their ethnicity.

He drops and album, and it flops. At this point it should be noted that being a talented lyricist (which he was) doesn’t automatically equate to making great songs, and if you are a talented lyricist, and people appreciate your lyrics, don’t dumb it down to appeal to the pop crowd, cause their support is fickle, and you’ll lose your original fan base, who feels you sold out.

Then Jin goes back to Hip Hop purist, and makes music that appeals to the original fan base, but it’s too late. Fast forward to the present, Jin goes to Asia, and sells millions of records around China and the surrounding countries, rapping in both English and Cantonese.

Moral of the story, as stupid as the label ‘Chinese Rapper’ is, don’t make efforts to avoid the fan base that actually supports you. Jin connected a people with an art form they normally did not feel connected to; that should be embraced. Eminem did the same thing with white folks and Hip Hop, and he got very wealthy in that process.

People call me a Punjabi rapper, a Sikh rapper, a conscious rapper, a righteous rapper, revolutionary rapper etc. As inaccurate as some of those labels are, I’m not going to go out of my way to dispel them, nor will I go out of my way to maintain them. I appreciate all the support I get, even if folks have put me in a box. The box is just their way to better understand me. I’m hoping the people like the content I put out, but if they’re just giving me a chance because of my skin colour, hopefully I’ll win them over with the music. We don’t’ care where the chef comes from, as long as the food is good. I’m jus trying to serve good food.

Rappers rhyme, Emcee’s articulate ideas, Poets write poems on napkins, and sell them for millions on eBay.

So if your curious, the labels I prefer, and try to live up to are: Toronto based Emcee, Adorable Emcee, Talented Emcee and Creative Emcee.

I’m ok with the other labels, it’s whatever folks feel comfortable with.

Now it’s time to vent.

The one label I am NOT cool with is: Aspiring Rapper/Emcee

I’m not aspiring to Emcee and put out music, I’m ALREADY putting out music, and I got over 50 tracks released in 2009 alone. An aspiring doctor is still in the process of becoming a doctor, an aspiring Olympian is trying to make the Olympics. I’m not trying to get anywhere; I’m doing what I set out to do. Aspiring is a polite notch up from the word “wanna-be”

Now if you think I’m aspiring to get signed to a record deal, I’m not. I’m aspiring to start my own record label. I don’t aspire to be some one else’s employee. Remember Folks HUMBLE can be an adjective or verb.

Call me an up and coming artist, if you want to reference to the fact that I’m new, or an Independent artist, if you want to refer to the fact that I’m not mainstream.

I feel better now.

I always felt that I didn’t have a best friend, and that each of the people in my life serve a purpose, and they could probably combine to become one really creepy Voltron looking best friend.

My manager Balraj provides me the necessary structure to get things accomplished, otherwise I’d be a pointless artist who thinks the world should cater to his art, and all my tracks should be viral. All my success to this point is attributed more to the work ethic than the talent or content. Balraj is that dude that makes things happen, and if he doesn’t know how to do it, he’ll learn, and then make it happen.

Harman The Hater is my chi… regardless of public perception; this guy has an enviable ability to stay emotionally intact, no matter what the circumstance. I can call him and spaz out, cuss him out, or just vent, and he knows how to slow down the heart rate.

Babbuviscious is the dude that puts the energy into every project, even when my energy is gone. He shows and adds more excitement towards this movement, which opens up a whole new element of it. At the El Mocambo show, he won over the crowd just working his magic.

As the folks in Edmonton quickly learned, Sikh Knowledge is that icing, cherry, chocolate sprinkles, and crack cocaine to make anything you do 10 times better. I got a whole roster of folks on the official and unofficial team ready to make things happen. 90% of my good fortune comes from their contribution, I know this post sounds like a acceptance speech for an award I haven’t won, but folks deserve their props.

I mentioned folks who have public reference points, but I also have an extended family around this planet making things happen everyday for me. We also started a street team to create a space for folks, who want the movement to grow, to contribute.

Dead Before You Hit The Ground

On the plane back from Edmonton (crazy show! I’ll post some performance footage soon) I was watching an flick about situation in Ireland in the late 80’s and early 90’s related to IRA. In the film, there was a quote that said something like “in war, truth is always the first casualty, and information is as dangerous and bullets.”

Folks always talk about being well informed. I’ve even heard folks replace the idea of “seeing things our way” with “they haven’t been truly informed yet”, like disagreeing with someone probably means you don’t understand them, and they just need to hammer their point 9 more times into your head for you to understand, which invariably means in this case, you agree with them.

The information that reaches the masses is related to the interests at stake. Pretty son generations won’t know that KFC stands for Kentucky Friend Chicken, because the stakeholders (mainly KFC) need to do anything to divert attention away from the fact that you’re eating greasy friend chicken.

History has shown that anyone who begins to build momentum with the people, and begins to inform them with ideas that serve interest outside those of the powers that be, ends up dead. Freedom of speech only exists, as long as you’re not saying something worth hearing. Therefore the success of a revolutionary message isn’t measured in its popularity, but in the unfortunate premature demise of the messenger.

Revolutionaries Emcee’s Dead Prez are constantly harassed by the police, and even won a lawsuit after one of their video shoots was interrupted by the cops, they were assaulted. Dudley George, Malcolm X, and Martin Luther King should all be reminders of what freedom of speech is really about.

While I doubt I’ll be in the sniper scopes anytime soon, movements are cut off at the head quickly once they gain momentum. So when we see civil rights leaders running around free, jumping on the latest bandwagon, let the continuity of their existence be the measure of their real commitment to the people and resolve to fight the oppressors, who would have merked them years ago, if they really posed a threat.

Nothing For Sale

Sitting on the beach with Sikh in San Francisco a few months back, I was staring at the Pacific Ocean (for the first time) thinking to myself that I never thought a year of posting my work on youtube would get me a plane ticket to California. We rocked a show in Fresno the following night in at an invite only event of about 200 folks. The highlight of that evening for me was when one of the waitresses of the venue came up to me after the performance asking where she could buy my CD.

6 months later I’m proud to say I still don’t have a CD for sale, and if you love the work, you can get it free in the Downloads sections (the newer stuff isn’t available, because I haven’t got a chance to package it together yet). Sikh is inspirational in that sense; he wants to fund his own projects, so it’s at no cost to the people.

Back to Cali… after the show, we were interviewed for East West Magazine, amongst a few others.

Who got Connections?

Any art form is about connecting. We go to the museum, and see a dot and a triangle, and they tell us it’s art, and worth millions, and we don’t get it. Rappers talk about guns, drugs, violence, and folks consider it a negative Influence on the children, but really they don’t get it. When folks listen to Rihanna sing ‘We gon run this town tonight’, they’re not listening to Rihanna brag, they’re putting themselves in her shoes. She’s singing an anthem of their desires and dreams. 50 cent rapping ‘go shawty, it’s your birthday’ will always be timeless, because at any given moment, in any given part of the world, someone is celebrating a birthday, and playing that track.

When 50 raps about the money and women, the listener is living vicariously through the rap, and relating it to themselves. Material wealth, status, and sex are very easy ways to reach the masses, because all of us have those urges and desires. To start discussing topics on social issues like genocide, poverty, racism… people aren’t going to immediately connect. I had people telling me they couldn’t watch my MILLI video, because it was too depressing. That’s a fair comment. People turn to media for entertainment, and if they’re not entertained, they’ll change the channel.

As members of the hip hop community, we all have our own personal line, of what we’re willing to and not do to get the peoples attention. I try to create content that I feel is underrepresented in the genre, and sometimes I get the reality check that it’s underrepresented for a reason.

There’s a certain level of pretentiousness that comes with being an artist who creates art and expects the crowd to receive it, rather than trying to work with the crowd to create art they want to receive. That’s where I tip my hat to the party music makers; they have the people in mind when they make their tracks. Outkast, I feel, has perfected the balance; beautiful music, and relevance, when you decide to take in the lyrics.

Family

A byproduct of this movement is exposing new peoples to the genre of hip hop. As I work tirelessly (well kind of hard) to become a hip hop contributor on behalf of my area code, folks who share commonalities with me outside the music are starting to dial in. many of the comments I receive from fans are to the effect of “ I don’t normally listen to rap, but I like your stuff”. It’s clear the content of my work, as opposed to the actual demonstration of the art is winning some folks over, and that’s fine. I never got into hip hop until I saw Andre3000 wearing a turban in his video back in the 90’s. that connection served as a catalyst for a life long relationship with this artform I love. Hopefully in the future , the next great emcee or revolutionary will cite me as a reason they fell in love with the movement.

As much as I love the compliments, I don’t enjoy them at the expense of other folks in the art form. I was recently told that I take something that is so ugly and make it beautiful (specifically comparing my version of A Milli’s to Lil’Waynes). Hip Hop isn’t ugly, folks just need to take time to understand it. This Andre3000 line comes to mind

she said thought hip hop was only guns and alcohol
I said oh hell nah, but yet it’s that to
You can’t discrimihate cause you don read a book or two”

The culture was bred organically, and obviously it’s had it’s share water thrown into the mixture to appease the pop consumer, but that doesn’t mean, those who are top, don’t deserve to be there. Music is food, and some foods appeal to a larger audience than others, we just need to ensure we have a balanced diet.

My priorities have been, and hopefully will always be, to do justice and further the art form known as Hip Hop. I view myself as a member of the hip hop community, and I feel the diversity within the community (the Souljah boys, Lauryn Hills, Jay-Z’s). As long as we under that umbrella, we family.

I’ll always be my biggest critique, and I’ve set the bar much higher than what would satisfy the public, with the work I put out. So no matter one stage I’m in at this adventure, I’m already focusing on the next 5 steps. Quite the recipe for a burnout, but what has become is even worse is my disconnection to my love of hip hop. Any writer working on his project is probably making efforts to avoid other projects, for fear of subliminal influences, and general frustrations to others positions in the industry.

I’m finding it harder to enjoy new music, not because it sucks (though some of it does), but more so that it evokes my work side emotions. I catch myself saying “Well that MuthF$&% doesn’t have to work two jobs.. he had 3 weeks to write that 1 minutes verse” or “Why the F#%$ you listening to this right now? get back to work”.

All my hip hop collection is sitting in a broken Hard Disk on my dresser, maybe irretrievable… that same content is what got me doing what I’m doing. As talented as the new artists are, I’m finding it difficult to get inspired by them, probably cause my big ego not letting me admire a kid 5 years younger working 5 years ahead of me.

We all (including myself) just need to remember there will always be those better, worse, and comparable, and just to put out content that supersedes the last effort. For me personally, I have to remind myself that I can’t keep wanting more, when I can barely handle what I’ve got, I really shouldn’t be complaining.

This is the last verse I recorded, it’s the new bar for me, and I’ve written since then, but haven’t bee on the mic or completed something I can throw out just yet. Let me finish my to-do list and I promise to throw out some new stuff for the supporters.

U Don't Know

I’m the son of a cabbie. I remember being like 4 years old seeing my father with a with a big co co on the forehead after being attacked and robbed. He forfeited a university degree to come here and live the capitalists dream. 25 years later, he’s still in the cab. I drive a much shinier more expensive car than he does, I actually bought his dream car, so he could enjoy having one in the driveway, he never drives it though. I’ve probably taken a cab 5-6 times in my entire life, but I’m still the son of a cabbie.

I got into writing when I was 8. I wrote a story about my teaching spazzing out and killing all the students. My classmates loved it, because they were all characters. My teacher enjoyed it because she probably wanted to merk half of us. I probably devoted the remainder of my childhood years only utilizing my creativity to lie. There’s a quote saying “artist use lies to tell the truth”, it’s a hot line… I don’t consider myself an artist though… just an imaginative son of a cabbie.

Now arrives the new title: Role Model. It’s kind of like, your favorite artist could step on a puppy and you’d blame the puppy. I guess with a respectable sum of youth, I’ve created an image they admire. It’s weird checking the fan page and seeing kids with your picture as their profile picture, or hearing someone say “Well Humble told me… and I think I’m going to do that” like I have any idea what I’m talking about. I can’t really relate to big celebrities as I’m a D-List in my own city at best, but I’m starting to see the dangers of the label. So because of my new title, let me apologize in advance if I don’t live up to it on any level. I’m just the son of a cabbie.

I'm excited about a few things..

The upcoming trips I got in Novembers, getting a chance to see a few more cities around North America, and performing for new audiences. I haven't had this many stamps on my passport before.

Working with new artists; I had time to talk out a game plan with one of the artist I want to eventually feature: B-Magic, a Norwegian born professional soccer player, who writes some witty punchlines, and has a stage presence to envy. pretty much, everything I wished I had in a mentor coming up in this I'm going to try to give to him. to his credit, he's eager to learn, and has a work ethic that guarantees success.

working on the next phases of thepoetproject and the Humble The Poet movement. We setting up a cyber street team, which will allow for more organization and mobility with new materials and projects. We really doing this from the ground up, it's really exciting.

Almost done the first track off the EP I'm doing with KenLo. It's going to be a breakup track, but heavily poetic... already got a video in mind for that.

concept planning for the LovHer track. working with digitology on this. it'll be really cool to have a lot of input in my first official video.

last but not least, been doing a little matchmaking with my homies. dishing out a little advice on ladies (like I have any idea what I'm talking about) and hooking up a first date. one of my closets peoples just got engaged to a girl I hooked him up with (well actually forced upon him, as he wasn't initially an enthusiastic participant). so I'm excited to get that 'bachola' commision 8)

I'm staying busy, when new stuff comes out, it'll be a storm. I have enough for another mixtape, just a matter of sitting down and making the tweeks. Here's one of the first tracks I ever wrote, it's was a breakup song; I was on the receiving end of this one, yet they still take my advice.

Hit up some hip hop karaoke for Harman the Hater’s birthday… Me and BabbuViscious rocked ‘Rosa Parks’ on stage… crowd went nuts, organizers went nuts, even the photographer was showing love, telling us “hey you guys should start writing rhymes”. That’s when I got to be cocky and with my most pretentious voice say “well actually, I am a professional rapper” (professional in this case will be defined as has been paid to rap, not that I’ve made much, but enough to consider myself a rhymesayer by professions: P ).

The following night was an actual gig (paid ;D ) back at the EL Mocambo. We opened for the Muslim Punk Band: The Kominas. Highlight of that performance was an old East Asian lady, who was jamming hard to Technorganic, putting 50 cents on the monitors for us. Crowds were feeling the stage presence, and I’m hoping more folks will take the time to come out and see what we do live, it’s a whole other experience. With a few shows coming up in November, I’m hoping to keep the handicam with me, and record some of this stuff to post.

Working on brand new material off some of the stuff KenLo sent me. Really taking my time with it. Also working towards setting up a street team, and getting a few more performances popping off around the continent (hopefully the globe soon).

The Good....

The second track I collaborated on with the good folks out in the Uk. Initially we were supposed to do a show in Birmingham at the end of this month, but decided to wait till the end of the year to generate some more time for promo. This was a request track to acknowledge some of the youth that passed before their time. One in specific was Vijay Singh, a 13 year old who committed suicide a while back.

For any culture, summer is wedding season. I don't normally enjoy attending wedding (probably because I don't make use of the open bars), but this summer I attended a respectable amount (like 3). After each wedding, I received messages about "Humble The Poet was at this wedding" One fan even messaged me saying they were too shy to come and say hello. I remember being in Cali and one of the guys who helped organize my appearance there said it was a "dream come true to kick it with me". The ego strokes are great, but dramatically dangerous, especially when there is no shortage of negative comments coming to balance them out.

It's hard to believe the hype and ignore the hate. A hip hop forum moderator just critiqued the FEAR verse saying it was "lmao not good, not good", another posted went through the effort of posting a giant THUMBS DOWN pic. It's silly to think that one lone comment can erase the accolades the track has been getting in the short time it’s been out, but it does. I guess it comes with the territory; the skin needs to be much thicker than normal to deflect both the compliments and criticisms. Before I started sharing my work, I had this nauseating feeling that I was one of those delusional American Idol contestants who embarrasses themselves once they open their mouth. Even to this day, most of my favorite tracks seem to be my least popular, an element of disillusion still exists.

I have, however, amassed an invisible army online, that usually deals with the haters before I even get a chance to log on. I thank y’all for the support, and trust that it hasn’t gotten to my head. I’m being brought out to the UK and Edmonton this upcoming month, and I’ll be able to connect with more folks and keep this movement thriving with an exponential momentum.

Jadakiss shared some advice that Jay Z gave him. He said that the slow grinder, the slow climber will always enjoy it more, than the overnight success story, if only for the simple fact that they can look back at all their work, and relish the journey. This site officially launched in March… and I’ve got 50 + tracks to revisit, and hopefully in the coming years the catalogue will continue to grow and evolve.

We gon keep it moving no matter what.

This track is from another Toronto Emcee Choclair. The beat is banana's and my man Ginny of thenewsauga.com sent it my way and told me to get up on it. The time I wrote this track, I was trying to slow down my words and become more audio-friendly for folks who may not be used to following the lyrics. I wanted to say more by saying less, but then I read a comment on a blog about my lyrics being weak. Dumbing it down is an art in itself, but sometimes the hip hop purest will prevail. The Essence is what was conceived from this time of thought. At the end of the day, I'm definitely not representing Toronto as much as I need to, so here's a push in the right direction

Back in June, I was in the car with Sikh and he brought some of his latest works.. one of the tracks was titled: Drives A Compressor. One of the heaviest beats I've ever heard, and knew it needed content equally as heavy. In July I asked him if I could have the beat for my birthday, although a well known U.S rapper requested the beat, referring to it as being "Historic", Sikh gave it to me. In August, I'm sitting on a 12 hour bus ride from Chiang Mai to Bangkok out in Thailand, with my oversize headphones, ipod and notebook. There was no light in the bus, so I used the glow of the Ipod to write the lyrics to the track. In September I show it to Sikh to get his blessing, he falls in love with the track and blesses it with 16 bars of his own unique perspectives on the female experience. The plan was to release this track with a video by late October, Sikh leaked it on his blog last week instead.

Back in June, I had a show out in Cali, and after the show I was interviewed by Navdeep Dhillon, an online journalist and creator of Ishqinabackpack.com. He asked me and the other performers I was with a bunch of questions in the parking, and I don't remember how I answered most of them (Cali girls are such a distraction). He recently posted a slideshow of the interviews on here.

I performed one verse on one track last night a Dak Digi's album release party, and the fan reception was great (video coming as soon as I track down the camera girl). A lot of non-brown folks were in the crowd and they showed me a lot of love. So when I see the title of Navdeep's video as 'Sikh Rappers' I start worry that I may be becoming boxed in. I might have to get my MF Doom on, and rap with a mask. A few days ago Navdeep also emailed me around 25 questions for a followup, so hopefully that will be out soon.

He used pictures off my personal Facebook page, so objects in the video may not appear as cool as usual =)

When 50 cent was first discovered it was by RUN DMC Dj: Jam Master Jay. JMJ helped 50 get his first record deal. The Advance Money given to 50 at that time was $60,000. JMJ took $40,000 as a finders fee, lawyers took $15,000, leaving 50 with $5,000.

Papoose was discovered by DJ Kay Slay... They released a new mixtape every month... eventually off the buzz, Papoose was signed with an advance of 1.5 million, DJ Kay Slay took his cut. Paps later terminated his relationship with the record company. I'm sure that finders fee that Kay got wasn't refunded.

Moral: There's no favours in the industry, only business deals.

last year I was approached by an entrepreneur to be part of a event happening this month. She was excited and enthusiastic and shared a few events she wanted me to perform at. This was right after a performance and I pretty much said yes to anything she offered (Rule: learn to say no). My performance rule is pretty simple: Charities and non-profits, I'm there at no cost. But if your planning to profit off the event, you have to share a piece of the pie. That doesn't necessarily mean cash, but coverage of expenses, and access to the events (Believe it or not, I know artists invited to events to show their work/perform and are still asked to buy a ticket). With this entrepreneur, at the request that I have someone be with me during my attendance at the event I was advertised to be at (which my manager requested clarification on weeks in advance with NO reply), her eventual (and delayed) position was that I wasn't a make or break of the event and it wasn't going to happen (she stands to make 4 digits off this event).. Fair enough, they always say not to burn bridges, I was too busy lighting my match to hear that.

When i released my very first video on youtube, and wasn't even calling myself Humble The Poet yet, I was approached by some well known UK producers to work on a project, they also sold it to me as an opportunity of exposure, and that they were doing ME this favour. I did the track as they requested , at my own expense( back when I didn't have my own studio setup). not only was I not chosen for the track, (I learned they pitched the same sales pitch to quite a few artists), I wasn't even told.. I had to chase them down to get a "Oh yea, sorry we'll be going with someone else"

Moral of these stories, Exploitation is rampant, Believe in yourself more than anyone can believe in you, that way no one else can take advantage of you.

When Jay Z was first starting out, he went into a meeting with a record label, the label rep told Jay to show him what he's got. Jay's reply "This isn't a free show" and he walked out of that meeting and started his own record label: Roca Fella Records.

I'm learning a lot about being a Diva in entertainment. Immortal Technique told the organizers of a recent DC show to 'Fuck Off' if they didn't have the specific sound setup he wanted. Being 'Humble' the Poet, making demands of a $3000 sound system doesn't really fit the bill, but when you perform on a shitty sound system, the audience doesn't blame the Sound Boy, the attribute it to your talent. Take care of yourself, because other folks won't be looking out for your best interests. The ego can be your best friend in some of these scenarios, and in others it can also be your worst enemy.

I heard about this producer KenLo from Sikh Knowledge, who passed me his CD. I found a track I liked and put out a freestyle. KenLo contacted me after with praise for the track, and now we're working on a little project together. No promises of fame and stardom, no exploitation, just two folks making some magic. I couldn't even tell you when that's coming out. Here's how it all started though.

Asides from the fact that his website looks nicer, He's on point way too often. Back, when we first met, he gave me a beat reel which contained an amazing amount of material. One of these beats was titled 'Never The Same'. I took the track, and had fun with it, hoping to impress him enough to keep him working with me. He said he liked the track and said he'd get work mastering a final copy. That never happened. Since then we've worked on enough material to have and HTP/SK album (which I've been trying to make happen ever since I met him). That initial 'Never The Same' track was renamed 'Be About It', but was never heard from again, until today. It's still unmastered (Another reason why I loath the dude). here it is:

5 year plan

I ran into my peoples Mike today, we went to school and graduated B.ed together. We always fed off each others grinds, even though we can from different worlds. I'm the son of a cabbie who wouldn't let resources be an issue for me to make productive accomplishment (note: productive = school/work i.e. Humble the Poet wasn't productive to him until I started getting paid for gigs). Mike on the other hand, is the product of a single mother, and has a younger brother that makes ridiculous sums of money participating in activities that can't be mentioned. Mike worked jobs to pay his way through school and took the bus everywhere, and when we graduated, the first thing he wanted to do was buy a car, and he did. He quickly realized the car was a waste of money and got rid of it.

For the past 5 years, we've been in contact, sharing our plans and the next steps for our grinds. He taught me about side hustles to get extra (tax free) money on the side. I showed him the benefits of owning property. Everyday the bus stop he'd be waiting at faced the condo that I bought. He watched it month after month under construction, and it kept him motivated. for 5 years he took the bus, wearing his shirt and tie.

Today, he flashes his Car keys. The car can only be explained with one word: "Ignorent" but it also represents the success of his five year plan:

Pay off Student Loans
Buy a property
Buy a car (cash)

Mike had a 5 year plan, and accomplished it. I asked him what was next, he replied "I dunno, You got this Poetry/Rap thing going , I don't know what to do"

That long ass story lead to the original point of the post. My 5 Year plan... 50 cent accomplished his 5 year plan in 1 year. Drake started pursuing rap around 3 years ago. The Game was only rapping for a 1.5 before making it big. Then you have folks who have been in the game for over a decade with very little to show for it. I've spent alot of time thinking about what I want to accomplish with this in the next 5 years.

so here it is, and hopefully y'all can stick with me to keep me accountable...

In 5 years, I hope to:

Be Humble The Poet on a full time basis (not rely on the two other jobs I work to feed myself)
Establish at least one other Artist on My Label: Believe Me Music Group
Release a total of 5 Mixtapes and one commercial Album
flirt with Keyshia Cole
Perform in at least 10 different Cities on at least 3 different continents

That's about it for now... hopefully this site will still be buzzing in the upcoming years, and y'all can watch the growth

Big Dreams, Big Schemes

Throwing out the first mixtape wasn't work at all. I put together tracks, and when I felt I had enough (25+), I packed them in a sequence and shared it with the world. With the second, it hasn't been so easy. I've been debating whether to keep the same old format (25+ mini verses), or do something that resembles an album more, with more full length, properly produced tracks.

I'm currently writing 4 tracks simultaneously, I want to have them done before my show on October 2nd, but I think that may rush the tracks, and I'll be left with something weaker than the first. So I guess the mixtape will come out when it's ready, and I havn't decided what it will look like. In the meantime, I'm sending the stems for my new single LOVHER to Montreal, so Sikh can put on final touches, and add his verse in sequence. Hopefully by the end of the month, we'll have the video shot, so it can ready for a November Release.

The Re-Up

Back from 3 weeks in Thailand, and though things seem stagnent, the movement is the most active it's probably ever been. I've been finishing up tracks for the fam out in England for a project they have related to the Genocide in 1984. They're working to get me out there for a performance, so that should be fun, and a great opportunity to make some new fans out in Europe. Last time I was out in Amsterdam, at a pizza spot I ran into these MCs on their independent grind. They had been flown out to tour half the continent. I'm hoping to get a base in a few cities in North America to run a tour, but Europe seems like a promising situation as well.
I've also been working on my first official single (by official I mean something that is cleared to actually be played on the radio and other outlets). The track is titled Lovher, and its 3 different verses, telling three different stories about what females go through in life. Sikh Knowledge created the backdrop for the track, and when he heard my verses, he asked to contribute a 3rd. He ripped it, and definitely outshone me on track, but that'll only serve to make this single even more monster.
We're going to shoot a legit video for it, and I'll probably be casting females soon for the shoot. If you're in Toronto, and interested in being part of the project, send a message. I'll most more info as to what I'm looking for in a few weeks.

this track was birthed from the rememberence of 25 years since the holocaust on the Sikh people... the guitar is from a Tupac track titled 'Thugz Mansion'. The goal of the track was to make something in memorial of the events of 1984 without the fiery passion that is normally accompanied. We need to use the pain of those memories to help us to connect to folks who are currently experiencing the same types of oppression.

Technorganic Has Arrived!

After weeks of talking about it, Technorganic is finally here. Back in March Sikh came to me with this Flying Lotus track, and we vibed long and hard to make this song. The original beat had no sound outside the acoustic instruments; it was very raw and organic.

The idea behind Technorganic is basically that nature will always overcome whatever B.S we throw at it. This is going to be a club banger, and hopefully on your nearest radio station soon.

Pops and Hip Hop

My father was sharing an interesting take on support with my brother law recently. He was talking about how his father supported him in his life, he can only continue that by supporting me. He said "I give him things and help him, because someone gave to me and supported me, and in the future he (meaning me) will help and support someone else".

This reminded me of why I'm working to be a proactive force in hip hop. It would definitely be great to be in a space where this is my full time gig, but more importantly, I'm already indebted to the culture for what it has provided me growing up. Artists, such as Nas, Outkast, Tupac, Lauryn Hill, and Ras Kass, have inspired me and carried me through some crazy times, that at this point, I need to continue that cycle. I simply want to continue the support and inspiration given to me by those who came before. I feel I've benefited so much from the cultural collection plate, that it's my time to give back. Not to mention, I'm having a lot of fun on this journey.

Now that the mixtape is out, I'm listening to it regularly, critiquing myself, trying to figure out how to grow from it. I'm hoping to have enough material for another mixtape by July, and with that, I'm hoping to show tangible growth . I also need to step up my live performance game. I've been booked for a few things coming up, but nothing significant. I might start back up on the spoken word scene just to get more stage time. If you have any ideas as to upcoming events you'd think I'd fit well on, let me know...

Back On Track (New verse included)

Illness, swollen tongue, and life in itself have gotten in the way of this daily verse project... I'm not sure if I'm losing credibility by being unable to actually drop something everyday. I figure if you like what I'm doing, you like it, if you don't, you don't. I doubt there's nit-pickers out there, that would have loved me; hadn't I missed a post for April 1. I'll just do what I do, and hope folks enjoy coming back.

Shout outs to Sikh Knowledge, who's in bed after hurting himself at the gym. stay up homeboy, you'll be back on your feet soon, making me sound good with all the work we got happening.

The Toronto anthem was complete on time. I'm not sure I emailed it to the right guy for the competition. The track itself doesn't reflect the best of what me and Sikh could have done together, and he told me to hold off sharing wit y'all until he can make some adjustments.

Sikh also sent me an updated version of Technorganic....it's sooo bananas. I want to share it with y'all, but I don't want to rob y'all wit the experience of the final cut. This is actually a song you should be hearing in the clubs, and blasting out of cars. I can't wait till it's finally done.

I'm also working on a verse on Kanye's latest intro "Say You Will". I think you folks will like it. My flow is a bit slower, and alot more emotional (without sounding whinney like I do on the Milli verse). I want to get Sikh on that, so it may take a while to come out, as the track has to fly to Montreal and back :)
For my musically inclined readers, I was given a beat in 6/8 timing to spit on. I'm enjoying the challenge, and I hope to have that out this week as well...

1 Step at a Time

Although I'm not releasing any recordings, the writing is still happening daily. The recording is taking a toll on my voice because I'm breaking one of the cardinal rules for rap: Never Read off the notepad, have your shit memorized before you step in the booth. Before I had my own studio setup, I would put this rule in practice to save money when I was renting studio time. Now I spend an hour writing a verse (16 bars) and another hour trying to get it through mic. That's 2 hours a day I don't have. My new strategy is to write daily, but only record on the weekends, when I have a bit more time to toy around.

I'm also doing something I haven't done since last summer, which is work on a full length track. Most of the tracks on the mixtape are 16 bar verses, but there are a few full length tracks (Voice for the Voiceless, Cry Now, My Own eyes). Those Full lengths were written a while back, and it's taking a little adjusting to write 3 verses and a hook for a full length.

I'm working on a track with Sikh Knowledge called Technorganic... the beat was produced by Flying Lotus, and this beat is bananas. When Sikh was in town the last time, we sat in my car for about 30 mins just vibin on the track. The brainstorm session was amazing; just going back and forth, exchanging ideas, and feeding off each other's excitement. I vibe to the rough cut every morning, envisioning it on major radio stations by the summer... time will tell I guess...

One more verse for this T-dot anthem competition. After this is mixed and recorded, I'll go back to daily posts. If you have any ideas about what I should include in this track about Toronto, I'd love to get your input. Maybe share some of the prize money :P

A New DIrection

As I recover from yet another cold, I decided to save my voice and write a post. This would be a great way to share my thoughts without the constraints of rhyme and beat, and ramble on topics without worrying about being clever or witty. It's also a great way of being interactive, instead of a one way conversation.

First and foremost, I want to thank all my supporters. If you take the time to watch a video, listen to a track, download the mixtape, or pay any attention to me what so ever, I consider you a supporter. The term fan seems too hierarchic. You support what I'm doing, and I really appreciate it. I'll still be posting verses (almost) daily, and the mixtape is ready for free download here, and I'm hoping to release a few new videos as well as start doing some live shows (which would really require your support).

Since I'm not selling any of my work, my main motivation is fed from the response of the folks who hear my tracks and leave comments and ratings. I encourage you all to leave comments on the blog or youtube, because I read them all during breakfast, and make an effort to respond to anyone with a question or concern. The repetitiveness of recording leaves me sick of the track by the time the final cut get posted. I do, however, stay excited knowing that there are folks looking forward to hearing what I have coming up. This site is designed with those folks in mind. I have received a slot of useful input on the site and how it can be improved (e.g. haing more than one post on a page, adding a search function). So if you have any thoughts or ideas on how to make this a better experience, I want to hear from you.

I'm currently working with Sikh Knowledge on a song for a Toronto radiio station, which is hosting a contest for artist to submit an anthem for the city. I havn't had to write a full length song since last summer, and the timeline is tight (3 days until the deadline). The flow of ideas between Sikh Knowledge and I is nuts, and I'm really excited to submit the track. Once it's done, i'll post a sneak preview of it on youtube.
